Why is Holi celebrated?

Holi is one of the major festivals of Hindus. Holi signifies the victory of good over evil. On this day people throw colors and water among themselves and congratulate each other on Holi. Children, young and old all do fun, sing and dance at this festival.
They play songs and dance loudly in dhol and loudspeakers. Like other festivals of Hinduism, the festival of Holi is also mythological and cultural. Holi is lit one night before celebrating Holi. There is a mythological story behind it, according to which the story of Hiranyakashyap is associated with Holi.

Hiranyakashipu was a king of ancient India who avenges his younger brother's death with Lord Vishnu. Because Lord Vishnu was the one who killed his younger brother. Hiranyakashyap did penance to Bramha Ji to avenge his younger brother and he also got a boon.
Hiranyakashyap became proud of this boon received from Brahma ji and started thinking of himself as God and asked people to worship themselves and do a devotion.

Many years later Hiranyakashyap Raja had a son named Padra named Prahlada. Prahlada was the ultimate devotee of Lord Vishnu. He did not obey his wicked father and lived in worship and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Seeing this, Hiranyakashyap was very angry because he considered Lord Vishnu as his enemy.

In such a situation, the devout Prahlad's devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu did not like him and Hariyanyakashyap prevented Prahlada from doing devotion. When the devotee did not believe Prahlada, Hariyanyakaship tried to kill Prahlada.
Hiranyakashyap had a sister named Holika. Holika had a boon that she could not burn fire.

Hiranyakashipu told his sister Holika to take Prahlada in his lap and sit in the fire and in this way Hiranyakashyap devised a plan to kill the devotee Prahlada. Hiranyakashyap had plans to burn Prahlada but his plan could not succeed.

Because Prahlada Lord Vishnu was a great devotee and every problem kept calling Vishnu. Vishnu heard the call of the devotee Prahlada and provided him with armor. In this way the devotee Prahlada sat in the lap of Holika and Holika burnt to ashes.

This defeat of Holika symbolizes the destruction of evil. After Holika was consumed, Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu. In this way, evil is destroyed by the world and good is won. Due to this, Holika is lit in some states of North India a day before Holi.
